Tom Newall
Tom Newall was born in Leeds in 1986.Music has always played a major role in his life. He studied piano from the age of 4, later to study organ when at Leeds Grammar School. His principal study, however, is singing. In December 2004, he gave a recital and subsequently gained the DipABRSM. He is currently in his second year at Durham University, studying for a BA in Music.
Tom has been conducting for three years and has worked with a variety of ensembles and choirs. He was Musical Director of the Alwoodley Sinfonia, with whom he gave a successful season of concerts, including Brahms Piano Concerto No. 2 and Handel's Messiah. He also conducted the James Farrell Concert Band, leading them through a busy and exciting summer season, and also their first CD which was released in Summer 2005. Upon invitation of local councillor Robert Dyson, Tom was a founding member of the Shadwell Concert Band. Tom has just completed his first season as conductor of Paddock Orchestra, Huddersfield. He is very much looking forward to his second season, with highlights including Bruch's Violin Concerto No.1 and Dvorak's 7th Symphony.
Tom's first Durham performance was in December 2005, with a production of Gilbert and Sullivan's The Gondoliers, with the opera group DULOG. In Durham, Tom is Musical Director of the Durham University Voices, who are about to commence their inaugural season. Plans are also underway for a tour.
Tom has undertaken a number of guest engagements, including rehearsals with the Slaithwaite Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Yorkshire Late Strings Starters Orchestra. Forthcoming engagements include 'The Pirates of Penzance' in Durham, again with DULOG, Musical Director of Durham Opera Ensemble's first opera, Ravel's 'L'Enfant et les Sortileges', and 'Elijah' with Newbury-based Cecilia Consort.
