Did Huddersfield Need Another Orchestra?

Although I had no formal musical education, I learned to read music as a church choirboy. So when my son started to play the flute, I also had a try, and enjoyed the experience.

I joined the evening classes for orchestral playing, but when those ceased, seven or eight members decided to 'go private' and attempt to form our own orchestra, which has since developed into the thriving 'Paddock Orchestra'. This group provides the facility for some thirty or forty members to experience the joy of making music together each week, which I personally regard as the most important aspect of our orchestra. But if, under the enthusiastic direction of Mrs Alfi Glendenning, we can improve our musicianship (which we are doing!) and give concerts which raise money for charities, then these are valuable bonuses.

All good reasons, I believe, for this additional orchestra in Huddersfield, and long may it continue!

After some twenty-three years playing with Slaithwaite Philharmonic Orchestra, I was finding some of the music being played to be rather difficult and being short of breath, I resigned.

After two years with the u3a dance band playing nostalgic numbers from my youth, I felt the need for something more classical and the short and varied pieces played by the Paddock orchestra suited me very well.
