Violas

Humphrey Bolton - Principal

I switched from the violin to the viola in order to join the orchestra when it was formed. My wife, Rosemary, leads the flute section. I lead the viola section and am also the orchestral librarian, a job which causes many headaches as well as being rewarding. I go on string playing courses at Benslow in Hertfordshire. I am interested in topography (study of landscape and buildings) and am retired. My wife and I have a family - one daughter and a son and we are shortly expecting our first grandchild.

I have taken up the viola again since having a family. My teenage daughter is at University and my son preparing for his GCSEs. I joined the orchestra with much trepidation at the beginning of the 2004-2005 season, but the support of everyone has helped me to improve my playing and gain confidence. Since being awarded my first mute I have never looked back!
